Physiotherapy Assessment Birmingham: Your First 45 Minutes

A physiotherapy assessment in Birmingham at Prime Physiotherapy Clinic is a one-to-one, 45-minute appointment with a physiotherapist on Hagley Road in Edgbaston, by Five Ways. They find out what is going on, explain it in plain words and give your first treatment in the same visit. The price is £50 for 45 minutes.

It suits a new or lingering pain, injury or stiffness, or when you are unsure which treatment you need.

No GP letter is needed, and every visit is self-pay. Book your assessment online, or phone or WhatsApp us.

What Happens at a Physiotherapy Assessment?

Your initial physiotherapy assessment has five parts, much like the first appointment the NHS describes.

  1. Talking it through: questions about your symptoms, when they started and what eases or worsens them, plus your health, medicines, work, sport and goals. These physiotherapy assessment questions form the subjective assessment.
  2. Examination: your physiotherapist watches how you move, checks your range of movement, strength and balance, and may feel the joints and muscles. This is the objective assessment; only the area being checked is uncovered.
  3. Explanation: you hear what is most likely causing your symptoms, in plain words. If you need a doctor’s opinion or a scan, they explain why and suggest seeing your GP, or NHS 111 or A&E if urgent.
  4. Plan: you agree goals, treatment options and how often to come. There is no fixed number of sessions; your plan is reviewed at every visit.
  5. First treatment: this starts in the same 45 minutes and may include hands-on manual therapy such as joint mobilisation (manipulation only when suitable), exercises and advice. Your exercise programme comes on a printed or emailed sheet; tell us if an exercise makes the pain worse.

When to Book a Physio Assessment

Physiotherapy may help when pain, injury or stiffness makes everyday movement, work or sport harder, for example:

  • back pain, including pain that spreads into a leg
  • neck pain and stiffness
  • shoulder, knee, hip, ankle or elbow pain
  • minor sports injuries such as sprains and strains
  • muscle spasms and tightness
  • getting moving again after an operation, such as a knee replacement

Your physiotherapist may later suggest sports massage, acupuncture or trigger point therapy.

Price, Follow-Up Visits and Booking

Every visit costs £50 for 45 minutes; the first includes your assessment and first treatment. Payment is self-pay, without insurance or packages. Cancelling with under 24 hours’ notice, or missing a visit, may cost the full fee.

  1. Use our online booking form (where it hurts, the time of day you prefer, how to reach you) or phone or WhatsApp us.
  2. We get in touch to agree a date and time.
  3. Come in for your 45-minute assessment.

Before you come:

  • wear comfortable clothes you can move in, such as shorts, a T-shirt and trainers
  • bring any referral letter and recent scan or X-ray results

A scan is usually unnecessary: NICE guidance advises against routine imaging for low back pain outside specialist settings.

When to Get Urgent Help Instead

Some symptoms need urgent care instead.

Go to A&E or call 999 if you have:

  • back pain after a serious accident, or with chest pain
  • back pain with numbness, tingling, weakness or pain in both legs, loss of feeling around the genitals or bottom, or bladder or bowel changes
  • an injury where you heard a crack, or the part has changed shape, is numb or tingling, or the skin is blue, grey or cold

Contact NHS 111 or get an urgent GP appointment if:

  • back pain comes with feeling hot, cold, shivery or unwell, or severe pain starts suddenly or quickly gets worse
  • you cannot put weight on an injury or walk more than a few steps
  • a knee locks, gives way or is badly swollen
  • you cannot move your arm, or shoulder pain started after a fall

Unsure? Ask NHS 111. This is general information from NHS pages checked on 19 October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a physiotherapy assessment take?

It takes 45 minutes, covering both the assessment and your first treatment; follow-up visits are 45 minutes too.

Will I have treatment at my first appointment?

Yes, within the same 45 minutes: it may include hands-on techniques, exercises and advice. If you need a doctor first, your physiotherapist explains why and where to go.

How much does a physiotherapy assessment cost?

£50 for 45 minutes, first treatment included; follow-ups cost the same, with no packages. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead or the full fee may apply.

Can I book an assessment without seeing my GP?

Yes. No GP referral is needed. If you have a referral letter, bring it, with any recent scan or X-ray results.

What should I wear to my assessment?

Comfortable clothes you can move in, such as shorts, a T-shirt and trainers. Only the area being checked or treated is uncovered.

After my assessment, how many follow-up visits might I need?

We do not set a number in advance. Your physiotherapist reviews your plan and progress every time you come and says whether more sessions may help.

Do I need a scan before I come?

Usually not: NICE advises against routine imaging for low back pain outside specialist settings. We do not arrange scans. If you need one, or a doctor's opinion, your physiotherapist explains why and advises seeing your GP, or NHS 111 or A&E if urgent.

Is a private assessment different from an NHS one?

Much the same: NHS physiotherapists also ask questions, examine you and agree a plan. Here you book directly, pay £50 per 45-minute visit and start treatment at the first appointment.

I'm not sure which treatment I need. Where should I start?

Start with an assessment. Your physiotherapist works out what is most likely behind your symptoms, then suggests what may help, such as hands-on treatment, exercises, sports massage or acupuncture.
