What Is Physiotherapy Acupuncture?
Acupuncture, as delivered by our physiotherapists, is an evidence-based treatment involving the insertion of fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body. While rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, modern physiotherapy acupuncture is supported by scientific research demonstrating its effectiveness for pain relief and healing promotion.
The needles stimulate sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles, triggering the release of natural pain-relieving substances such as endorphins and serotonin. This creates both a local healing response and a system-wide reduction in pain and inflammation. All our acupuncture practitioners are fully qualified physiotherapists with additional acupuncture training.
Who Is It For?
Acupuncture is particularly effective for chronic pain conditions, headaches, and musculoskeletal problems that haven’t responded fully to conventional treatments alone. NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recommends acupuncture for chronic primary pain and tension-type headaches.
It’s suitable for most adults, though there are some contraindications. During your initial consultation, we conduct a thorough screening to ensure acupuncture is safe and appropriate for you. Patients who are nervous about needles are reassured to know that acupuncture needles are extremely fine — nothing like injection needles.
What to Expect
After a brief assessment, your physiotherapist selects specific acupuncture points based on your diagnosis. Fine, sterile, single-use needles are gently inserted — most patients feel a brief tingling or dull ache which quickly subsides. The needles remain in place for 15-25 minutes while you relax in a comfortable position.
Many patients describe the experience as surprisingly pleasant, with some feeling a sense of deep relaxation or warmth. After needle removal, we may combine acupuncture with other physiotherapy techniques to maximise the treatment benefit. A typical course involves 4-6 sessions, though you may notice improvement after just one or two.
